Resources for New Students

Hancock Commons students outside Edge Cafe
Each first-year residence hall has live-in student staff members who serve as community organizers, resources, and mentors. Each hall also is supervised by a professional staff member who lives on campus. For more information on the residence halls available to first-year students, please visit our Housing Options page.

Housing Process for Incoming Students

Incoming first-year students will submit a housing preference form over the summer before being matched with a roommate and receiving a housing assignment in August. For specific deadlines, please see the New Student Checklist.

Residential Commons

Colgate's living and learning program houses first-years and sophomores and supports students throughout their college years by fostering a welcoming, enriching, and supportive community.

A student's Residential Commons membership is determined by the building where they are assigned to live in their first year. Housing assignments for new students are made using the housing preference information they submit to Residential Life in the summer before they arrive at Colgate. Currently (through 2018–19), first-year students in a commons have the option to remain there as sophomores. Beginning in 2019–2020, all sophomores will be affiliated with a commons.

Housing Policies and Processes

General housing process
The following policies and conditions are applicable to all students, including those who elect to live in gender-inclusive housing residing with a person of a different gender. Students acknowledge an understanding of the terms of this policy and agree to be bound by them.
  1. All students must be undergraduates and eligible for university housing.
  2. Student must have the roommate code of each roommate prior to the selection process and fill the capacity of the requested space.
  3. Issues related to room assignments and vacancies should be directed to the Assistant Director for that specific area. Roommate difficulties and/or a desire to receive a new room assignment will require a meeting with the Assistant Director. Contact the Office of Residential Life at 315-228-7367 to schedule an appointment.
  4. If a roommate cancels their housing or moves out of the room for any reason, the remaining students must identify a new roommate to fill the vacancy within a timeframe established by the Office of Residential Life. If the vacancy is not filled during the allotted timeframe, the Office of Residential Life will assign an interested student to the vacancy or relocate the remaining resident(s) to another vacancy; room-type matching cannot be guaranteed.
  5. Colgate University is committed to the goal of fairness and equity in all aspects of the educational enterprise, and to a campus environment where all members of the community feel safe and respected. Acts of discrimination and harassment are serious violations of our community values.
  6. Aligning with most universities, Colgate University discourages students who are in a romantic relationship from living together in a residential housing unit.
  7. Incoming students may request gender-inclusive housing options at the time of their housing preference submission. Individual room assignments will be based on your housing preference form.
  8. Students who have disablity-related housing needs can request accessible accommodations.
Gender-inclusive housing statement
The Office of Residential Life is committed to providing a living environment that is welcoming for students of all gender identities. Students have the option to live on campus with whomever they choose, regardless of biological sex, gender, gender identity, or gender expression. Incoming students may request gender-inclusive housing options at the time of their housing preference submission.

Restrooms throughout Colgate's residence halls may be labeled as gender-inclusive, men's, or women's restrooms. Regardless of the label, Colgate, the Office of LGBTQ+ Initiatives, and the Office of Residential Life support students using the restroom that they feel most comfortable in. For a list of gender-inclusive restroom options, check out the campus map and click "Gender-Neutral Restrooms.
