Students, faculty, and staff work collaboratively and in intellectually robust ways to integrate their religious and ethical commitments with their academic pursuits.

Our Communities

Many of our students actively engage with their beliefs and faiths through student-led religious organizations. These groups support education and acceptance with frequent interfaith initiatives and events.

Buddhist Life
Founded in 2003, the BSA meets regularly for meditation. A student-run organization, the group facilitates discussions on Buddhist thought and how to integrate the teachings into the lives of busy college students. The BSA makes a number of visits each semester to monasteries, conferences, and retreat centers in the upstate New York area.

Catholic Life
The Colgate Newman Community is the Catholic faith community on the Colgate campus. We are dedicated to the four principles of the worship of the Holy Trinity, service and hospitality to the needy, education and intellectual formation, and recreation and community building activities. The Newman Community is also intended to foster a strong commitment to interfaith dialogue, service, and respect and we seek to be an open and welcoming community to all members of the Colgate and global community.

Hindu Life
Hindu students have an opportunity to observe their religion and also provide the community a chance to learn more about Hinduism. Besides regular prayer meetings, the HSA organizes an annual Diwali festival with prayers and festivities and celebrates other holidays as well.

Muslim Life
The MSA acts as a hub for Muslim students on campus by providing a close community of peers who host brown bag lunches, discussions, and gather together every Friday afternoon for prayer. Besides that, the MSA acts as a home for those interested in Muslim faith and Islamic cultures and traditions. Colgate's dinning hall is also committed to supporting Muslim life on campus by offering halal food.

Secular Life
We are a community for people who share secular beliefs. We aim to lessen the stigma that exists against atheists today through community service and active involvement in the interfaith movement at Colgate.

Protestant Life
University Church exists at Colgate to support the educational mission of the university, to minister to students, faculty, staff and the broader community, and to assist in the integration of faith and learning. All activities and services are open to the entire Colgate community and we draw great encouragement from the vibrant and diverse religious life here. University Church also affirms and seeks to work together with other Protestant groups on the campus and Protestant churches in the community.

The student-led chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) maintains a close relationship with churches in the area as well as the chaplains at Colgate. CCF sponsors a weekly large group meeting, regular small group Bible studies, speakers, social events, and service projects.

Need to Talk?

Are you experiencing an illness, crisis of faith, homesickness, death of a loved one, or relationship issues?  Are you struggling with choosing a major, your parents, coming out, or sexual harassment?

These are just a few of the things that bring students to the chaplains' office. Whatever it is, we're here for you.

Campus chaplains are trained religious professionals. In addition to offering pastoral counseling, we serve the greater Colgate Community regardless of religious affiliation.
